Carbon inventory per GHG Protocol
Full Scope 1, 2 and 3 calculation — with HCMI metrics for hotels. Up-to-date emission factors, dual reporting, biogenic CO₂ reported separately.
The carbon inventory follows the GHG Protocol Corporate Standard — the internationally recognised methodology for greenhouse gas accounting. Climactra captures your monthly consumption data, assigns it to the correct scope, and multiplies it with up-to-date, annually updated emission factors. Hotel-specific HCMI metrics (CO₂ per guest night, per occupied room) are calculated in addition.
Three scopes — fully covered
Every emission source is assigned to the correct scope and calculated per GHG Protocol definition.
Scope 1 — direct emissions
On-site combustion: heating oil, natural gas, wood pellets, company vehicles. Biogenic CO₂ from biomass is reported separately as a memo item (GHG Protocol climate-neutral) — only CH₄ and N₂O count.
Scope 2 — purchased energy
Electricity, district heating, chilled water. Climactra always calculates both methods: location-based (national grid mix) and market-based (your green-power contract). Mandatory per GHG Protocol Scope 2 Guidance.
Scope 3 — supply chain & guests
Food procurement, laundry, water sourcing, waste, guest travel, business trips. For spend-based factors, an automatic inflation adjustment via Eurostat HICP is applied.
How your footprint breaks down
Illustrative scope split of a 4-star hotel — Climactra calculates your real figures from your monthly data.
Dual reporting — required by the GHG Protocol
Scope 2 is always reported with both methods — location-based and market-based.
National grid mix

Four methodology rules
The calculation follows four strict GHG Protocol rules. Traceable, auditable, application-ready.
Current emission factors
No hard-coded factors — Climactra pulls every value from a maintained database with source citation and validity window. Factors are updated annually (grid mix, IPCC updates).
Biomass pitfall avoided
Biogenic CO₂ from wood, pellets and woodchips does NOT enter Scope 1 — climate-neutral per GHG Protocol. Only CH₄ and N₂O count; biogenic CO₂ appears as a separate memo item.
Dual reporting Scope 2
Both values (location-based and market-based) are reported in every report — as required by the GHG Protocol Scope 2 Guidance. The grand total uses the market-based value.
Scope 3 inflation adjustment
Spend-based data (EUR) is deflated to the emission factor's base year BEFORE multiplication. Index: Eurostat HICP. A common source of certification errors — automatic in Climactra.
